We are fortunate that we have many high-paying public sector jobs and these are the mainstay of our economy. However, we should encourage the growth of locally-owned, mom-and-pop businesses that will return more dollars into our economy and will provide our residents and tourists with the diversity in goods and services that we are currently lacking. We should find ways to prevent San Luis Obispo from becoming a mono-culture of corporate-owned chain stores. Our Economic Development Manager, the Chamber and the Downtown Association should be more proactive in finding ways to attract and sustain locally-owned businesses that provide locally-grown and locally-manufactured goods.
